India’s deadly roads took 75,000 young lives last year - says a report
According to the latest Road Accident Report for 2014 prepared by the road transport and highways ministry, India’s deadly roads took lives of 75,000 young people in the 15-34 year age group last year.
Over 82% of these victims were males.
What does the Report Say?
- The detailed age profile of road accident victims for calendar year 2014 reveals that the age group of 15-34 years accounted for the largest share of 53.8% in the total road accident fatalities.
- It was followed by the age group of 35-64 years accounting for a share of 35.7%.
Global Statistics
The latest estimate by the World Health Organization also shows that globally, world road traffic injuries are the number one cause of death among young people aged 1529 years.
Annually, about 3.4 lakh youth in this age group die in accidents.
Need to create the awareness
This shows that there is a need pay attention to making young people more aware of road safety issues. Families should play a big role in sensitizing them on how to behave safe on roads. It’s a mammoth loss and calculating the social cost would reveal how big it is

Appeal by Prime Minister
