Captain of INS Sindhuratna to face court martial
Sandeep Sinha – Captain Commander of INS Sindhuratna will face a general court martial (GCM) for last February’s mishap on board the submarine, which killed two officers, injured several sailors and triggered Admiral D K Joshi’s resignation as Navy chief.
Six other officers have been awarded “severe displeasure” – a black mark in their records preventing any promotion, foreign posting, course and the like for them for two years.
What is ‘Sindhuratna tragedy’?

- On 26 February 2025 smoke was detected on INS Sindhuratna off Mumbai coast
- On-board 4-5 sailors were airlifted to a Mumbai hospital after they fell unconscious from suffocation.
- The senior-most submarine officer of the Western Naval Command was on board.
- 2 people were killed while 7 were injured.
- The cause of the fire remains unknown.
- As per reports, smoke had engulfed compartment No. 3 in the sailors’ accommodation area when the submarine was underwater during a training mission, leading to deaths and injuries.
