This was done on the backdrop of the rising tensions before the first anniversary of an election her party had boycotted.
Zia had threatened to conduct mass rallies today in Dhaka to mark “Democracy Killing Day” – the first anniversary of the polls that her Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its allies had refused to join on the grounds that they would be manipulated by the ruling party. Now, she has been confined by police in her office.
