After weeks of fierce battle, the important rail hub of Debaltseve fell to rebel forces in eastern Ukraine. The Ukrainian president confirmed that he had ordered troops to pull out while the Russia-backed separatists reported taking hundreds of soldiers captive.
Intense fighting between Ukrainian government forces and Russian backed separatists in eastern Ukraine persisted in spite of a ceasefire deal. This threatens to collapse the ceasefire deal which was negotiated by the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, Germany and France.
After 16 hours talks, Presidents of Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany announced a comprehensive peace deal for eastern Ukraine. However, it is not yet clear whether Ukraine and the pro-Russian rebels have agreed on all of its terms.
In an attempt to establish peace by ending the prolonged Ukrainian crisis, the leaders of France and Germany went to Kiev (Capital of Ukraine) and Moscow (Capital Russia) with a proposal to end the fighting in eastern Ukraine.
