With this victory Pennetta won her first Grand Slam title at the US Open. Moreover, she then announced her retirement.
Pennetta, won 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 to become only the second Italian woman to win one of the tennis majors. The 33-year-old Pennetta, who is from Brindisi in Italy, confirmed that she plans to play the rest of the season before retiring.
