‘To the Brink and Back: India’s 1991 Story’ - a book written by India’s former minister Jairam Ramesh, was published.

Jairam Ramesh was Environment and Forest Minister (Independent Charge) in the UPA government.

The book oversees fast-paced changes in the economic sector introduced by the duo of P V Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh in 1991.

Why is the Book Important?

The book gives the first hand account as it narrates the author’s observations when he was part of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) during first 90 days of the Narasimha Rao’s government.

What does the Book contain?

The book presents key documents and notes, which are publicly presented for the first time. It also presents the personal papers of Narasimha Rao, private conversations with Manmohan Singh, Parliament proceedings, and the minutes of seminal Congress meetings.

About Jairam Ramesh

  • Jairam Ramesh is an Indian economist and politician belonging to Indian National Congress.
  • He is a Member of Parliament representing Andhra Pradesh state in the Rajya Sabha since June 2004.
  • At present, Jairam Ramesh is Chair of the Future Earth Engagement Committee, a research platform on global sustainability.
