Shashank Manohar elected as BCCI president

Shashank Manoher of the Vidarbha cricket association is declared as the BCCI president. He got elected unopposed at a special general meeting at the Cricket Centre in Mumbai.

He was nominated for a second term by all six full members of the East Zone. He will hold office till September 2017. Manohar has earlier served the board as president between 2008 and 2011.

Who is Shashank Manohar?

  • Shashank Vyankatesh Manohar is prominent lawyer from Nagpur
  • He has served as 29th president of BCCI between 2008 to 2011.
  • He is ofthen attributed as “Mr clean” in cricket administration circles.
  • Often credited as the ‘best president BCCI ever had
  • He is selected as the president of BCCI for the second time on October 4 2015
  • In his first term of presidency he suspended Lalit Modi for his misdemeanors which brought a bad name to the administration of Cricket and the game itself after giving Lalit Modi who was chairman IPL and vice-president BCCI during IPL season 3, after fair hearing through the BCCI disciplinary committee.
  • For this he was lauded nationwide for restoring some of the harm done to cricket’s image after the Lalit Modi affair

The BCCI

  • The BCCI is India’s richest sporting body and the richest cricket board in the world
  • It is the national governing body for cricket in India.
  • The board was formed in December 1928 as a society, registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act.
  • It is an consortium of state cricket associations
  • The state associations select their representatives who in turn elect the BCCI officials.

Election procedure of BCCI

  • BCCI holds annual elections at Annual General Meeting for all posts, with a bar on re-election of an incumbent president beyond two consecutive years
  • General Body may in its discretion re-elect the same person as president for the third consecutive year
