Speaking about the sidelines of a session on disaster management at the 102nd Indian Science Congress, V Subramanyam – a retired professor from IIT Mumbai said that Mumbai’s neighboring regions have experienced earthquakes that show a pattern of movement towards the city.
Earthquakes with magnitude of around 4 on the Richter scale have been occurring on the eastern side of the Thane Creek since 2008.
Three years ago, Kalyan registered an earthquake and last year it crossed the lakshman rekha with Thane experiencing an earthquake on April 16.
With reference to the city’s tendency build high towers, the scientist warned that an earthquake could prove too costly.
He also told that it is time we stopped constructing tall buildings. Moreover, the Base height proportion should be maintained.
When quakes happen, disproportionately tall buildings may tilt or collapse.
