Indians should get preference over foreigners for organ transplantation: Government

The Union government of India has mandated that allocation of organs under transplant surgeries should be made according to a specified sequence giving preference to Indians over foreigners.

However, the medical community has opposed the decision on the ground that this will force doctors to differentiate patients based on religion and nationality, which is a violation of Medical Council of India (MCI) Act.

Moreover, the move is said to hurt leading private hospitals that get a significant part of their revenue from organ transplantation of foreigner patients.

Medical industry of India is around $3 billion and is growing with the rate of 20% per year.
