India-Sri Lanka nuclear deal signed

February 17, 2025India & WorldOmkar Sawant

Sri Lanka signed a civil nuclear co-operation agreement with India. This is the first time that Sri Lanka has entered into such co-operation with any country. According to analysts this is a sign that Sri Lanka under its new leader, President Maitripala Sirisena, is veering towards India as a partner of first choice.

Sirisena and Modi

The agreement was signed in the presence of prime minister of India, Narendra Modi, and Sirisena who is in India on his first overseas visit as president.

Core issues in Civil Nuclear Cooperation Pact

  1. Transfer and exchange of knowledge and expertise, sharing of resources, capacity-building and training of personnel in peaceful uses of nuclear energy, including use of radioisotopes.
  2. Nuclear safety, radiation safety, nuclear security and radioactive waste management
  3. Nuclear and radiological disaster mitigation and environment protection
