DNA the next trend in Data Storage?

August 19, 2024Science & TechnologyOmkar Sawant

The world of Information Technology is facing the problem of huge data creation that is getting more and more difficult to store efficiently.

But solution to this problem might be the DNA in the body of every organism.

Because, scientists have taken inspiration from fossils to reach the most significant breakthrough on how to store information for years without worrying about loss of data.

DNA Storage over Contemporary Storage

  • Researchers have declared that DNA can be altered to save unprecedented amounts of digital data for at least 2,000 years.
  • They say that DNA has two major advantages over the contemporary storage device of choice, hard drive: size and durability.
  • An external hard drive about the size of a paperback book can back up five terabytes of information and might last 50 years. In theory, a fraction of an ounce of DNA could store more than 300,000 terabytes.
