Delhi became first state to implement Radhakrishnan panel recommendations on Road Safety

To deal with traffic violations in the city, the Delhi Traffic Police decided to start implementing recommendations of the Supreme Court appointed committee chaired by Justice KS Radhakrishnan from 15 December 2015 onwards.

With this decision, Delhi Traffic Police is the first in the country to implement the directions of the Supreme court appointed three-member committee on Road Safety.

Expected Effects of implementation

  • Suspension of driving licences for three months and other fines for drunken driving, over-speeding, using mobile phone while driving, and carrying passengers in goods vehicles.
  • Fines for first offence and subsequent offences in case of over speeding will be 400 rupees and 1000 rupees respectively.
  • In case of drunk driving
    • Court Challans will be issued
    • Such drivers could end up paying a fine of up to 2000 rupees besides serving jail term of up to 6 months, on being sentenced by magistrate on their first offence.
    • On subsequent offences of drunk driving, the accused will pay fine of up to 3000 rupees besides being sent behind bars for a period of up to 2 years.
  • Use of mobile phone while driving will attract a fine of 1000 rupees on first offence, while the amount of fine will be raised to 2000 rupees on repeated offences.
  • Not wearing a helmet and seat belt as well as carrying passengers in goods vehicles will also attract punishment with fine of 100 rupees on first offence and 300 rupees on subsequent offences.
