China’s Tianhe-2 remained world’s most powerful supercomputer

November 19, 2024Science & TechnologyOmkar Sawant

Tianhe-2, the supercomputer of China, remained at number one position as the most powerful supercomputer in the world. This was revealed by the 46th edition of the bi-annual TOP500 list of the world’s most powerful supercomputers released on 17 November 2015.

This is for the six consecutive times that Tianhe-2 topped the list. The computer was developed by China’s National University of Defence technology.

Tianhe-2 means Milky Way-2 and it led the list with a performance of 33.86 petaflop per seconds (quadrillions of calculations per second or Pflop/s) on the Linpack benchmark.

Tianhe-2 vs Titan

Tianhe-2 is almost twice as fast as the next on the list, Titan of the US Department of Energy, which has a performance of 17.59 Pflop/s.

No Change in Top-5

In fact, there has been no change among the ranking of the world’s top five supercomputers since June 2013 in the latest edition of the closely watched list.

About ‘Top-500’ List

The Top 500 list is considered one of the most authoritative rankings of the world’s supercomputers. It is compiled on the basis of the machines’ performance on the Linpack benchmark by experts from the United States and Germany.
