For the fourth time Ranil Wickremesinghe became the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
Wickremesinghe was active in Sri-Lankas parliament since 1977. He had served the country as its Prime Minister on three occasions. He was PM during 1993-94, 2002-2004 and since January 2015.
As no single party was able to achieve absolute majority the two main parties of Sri-Lanka (the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the United National Party (UNP)) decided to come together to form a government.
The General Secretaries of the two main parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work together in the parliament and form a National Government.
The historic MoU was signed by SLFP’s Acting General Secretary Duminda Dissanayake and UNP General Secretary Kabir Hashim.
Earlier, the SLFP Central Committee had agreed to the proposal of Wickremesinghe to join the National Government to be formed by the UNP.
