Justice T S Thakur was appointed as Chief Justice of India

The President of India Pranab Mukherjee on 18 November 2015 appointed Justice Tirath Singh Thakur as the Chief Justice of India. He will take over the office from 3 December 2015 as the 43rd Chief Justice of India. His tenure will be till 3 January 2017.

  • Tirath Singh Thakur (born 4 January 1952) was previously a judge of the Supreme Court of India.
  • He is a former acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court and later took over as Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court. Afterwards, he was elevated to the Supreme Court of India on 17 November 2009.
  • Justice Thakur will be next Chief Justice of India as Justice Dattu set to retire on 2 December. On the same day Justice Thakur will be sworn in as CJI by president Pranab Mukherjee.
  • He is due to retire on 4 January 2017.
