ISIS destroyed Temple of Bel in Palmyra: UN

According to a report by the United Nations, Islamic State for Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants destroyed 2000-year old ancient Temple of Bel in Palmyra, Syria.

The destruction was confirmed through the satellite images.

As per the reports, ISIS partially demolished the temple by explosives causing much damage to the temple. The temple was under the control of ISIS militants.

Temple of Bel

  • The Temple of Bel was an ancient stone ruin located in Palmyra, Syria.
  • The temple was dedicated to the Mesopotamian god Bel in 32 AD
  • Bel was worshipped at Palmyra in triad with the lunar god Aglibol and the sun god Yarhibol
  • These three deities formed the center of religious life in Palmyra.
  • Its ruins were considered among the best preserved at Palmyra.
  • It was declared as a World Heritage site by UNESCO
  • The site contains monumental ruins of a great city which was once one of the most important cultural centres of the ancient world
