Indian American author Jhumpa Lahiri awarded with 2014 National Humanities Medal by White House

Short story writer and novelist Jhumpa Lahiri was awarded with the 2014 National Humanities Medal by the White House, United States.

The medal was conferred onto her by President Barack Obama at a ceremony at the White House.

About Jhumpa Lahiri

  • Jhumpa Lahiri was born on July 11, 1967
  • She is an Indian American author.
  • Lahiri’s debut short story collection, Interpreter of Maladies (1999), won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction
  • Her first novel, The Namesake (2003), was adapted into the popular film of the same name.
  • She was born Nilanjana Sudeshna but goes by her nickname Jhumpa.
  • Lahiri is a member of the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, appointed by U.S. President Barack Obama.
  • Her book The Lowland, published in 2013, was a nominee for the Man Booker Prize and the National Book Award for Fiction.
  • Lahiri is currently a professor of creative writing at Princeton University.

  • It was inaugurated in 1997
  • The award annually recognizes several individuals, groups, or institutions for work that has “deepened the nation’s understanding of the humanities, broadened the citizens’ engagement with the humanities, or helped preserve and expand Americans’ access to important resources in the humanities
