In a dramatic move, Yemen’s powerful Shia rebels announced that they have taken over the country and dissolved the parliament. This is being seen as a move that concludes the months long power grab attempt of these rebels.
However, this development also forces the impoverished country deeper into chaos and intimidates to turn the crisis into a full-scale sectarian conflict, pitting the Iran-backed Houthi Shias against Sunni tribesmen and secessionists in the south.
As a result of this development, Yemen could also go into the hands of Yemen’s al-Qaida branch and create a challenge to the US counter-terrorism operations in the country.
