Bollywood film ‘Phantom’ banned from release in Pakistan by Lahore HC

Bollywood film ‘Phantom’ which is based on 26/11 terror attack on Mumbai was banned from relaese in Pakistan by the Lahore High Court. The court also banned its broadcasting on the cable networks as well as sale in the form of CDs.

The film was scheduled to release on 28 August 2015

The judge also asked the government of Pakistan that if the film is banned in cinemas, what the government could do to stop it from being available in the markets in CDs, considering the fact that the Bollywood films becomes easily available in the form of CD’s in Pakistani market.

Reason behind the decision

  • The decision by the court was given in response to the plea filed by Jamaatud Dawa (JuD) chief and Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed.
  • The petitioner in his plea argued that the film based on post-26/11 attacks contains filthy propaganda against him and his outfit.
  • He also argued that the film could be a direct threat to his life as the dialogues of the film could poison the minds of the public.

About the film

  • Phantom is an upcoming Indian action thriller film directed by Kabir Khan, and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and Siddharth Roy Kapur.
  • It stars Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif in the lead roles.
  • The film is about the post-26/11 attacks in Mumbai and global terrorism.
  • The film is based on crime author Hussain Zaidi’s novel ‘Mumbai Avengers’
  • The film is scheduled for release on 28 August 2015.

Past events

In the recent past, Saif Ali Khan’s ‘Agent Vinod’ and Salman Khan’s ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ were also banned from being screened in cinema halls in Pakistan.

However they are freely available on CDs and DVDs in Pakistan
