Bangladesh government locked Khaleda in office

Bangladesh police have banned all protests in the capital– Dhaka and locked the countries main opposition leader Khaleda Zia in her office in Dhaka.

This was done on the backdrop of the rising tensions before the first anniversary of an election her party had boycotted.
Zia had threatened to conduct mass rallies today in Dhaka to mark “Democracy Killing Day” – the first anniversary of the polls that her Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its allies had refused to join on the grounds that they would be manipulated by the ruling party. Now, she has been confined by police in her office.

  • She was the Prime Minister of Bangladesh from 1991 to 1996 and again from 2001 to 2006
  • The first woman Prime Minister in the history of Bangladeshand
  • Second woman in the Muslim world to head a democratic government as prime minister (after Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan in 1988–1990)
  • She was the First Lady of Bangladesh during the presidency of her husband Ziaur Rahman
  • Currently, the chairperson and leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)
  • BNP was founded by Ziaur Rahman in the late 1970s
